Human centric lighting

Human Centric Lighting – the latest lighting trend!

Human Centric Lighting is the newest technology in professional lighting! Everyone keeps talking about it- and there is a good reason for that!

This technology takes into consideration not only the visual effects of the lighting, but also the non-visual ones. It is designed to positively affect people’s mood, productivity and wellbeing. To do so, it takes into account the circadian rhythm (which is the body’s natural sleep/wake cycle), daylight, user experience, etc. 1

But how does circadian rhythm relate to lighting?

Well, the circadian rhythm responds to light. According to the amount of light and type of light in the environment, our body has certain reactions in terms of behavior and health.

Therefore, if we are able to adjust the light color and intensity, we can “trick” the body and create positive effects over a person’s mood and wellbeing. According to studies, cool white light with a high proportion of blue light has a stimulating effect and promotes concentration, and warm white light is calming.  Using Tunable White lighting, we can therefore create this environment in a natural way – mimicking daylight. 2

Where is it used?

You can understand now why this type of lighting is so necessary in spaces such as offices and educational institutions, as well as hospitals and care homes. In fact, more and more modern hospitals are turning to this lighting solution, as it helps patients recover faster, optimize sleeping and provide them with a more pleasant stay. Same goes for companies that want to increase their people’s productivity!

How can you create a Human Centric lighting solution?

To simulate daylight in a manner that is as true to nature as possible, light from cool white and warm white LEDs covering the entire colour palette from 2,700 to 6,500 Kelvin is mixed together. A driver with intelligent technology and a wide dimming range of 3% to 100% are the basis of the Tunable White system. Pre-calibrated kits ensure that colour tolerances are balanced out and the colorimetric locus remains constant across all modules and dimming levels. Suitable control and operating elements from Tridonic, ranging from simple button controls through wireless control and all the way to integration in DALI systems, round off the system perfectly.
